RIT fonts: supporting a range of applications

Rajeesh writes about recent enhancements to RIT fonts: RIT has published a dozen open source Malayalam fonts so far, and till now they supported the version 2 of OpenType specification for Indic scripts (which is nearly 20 years old, as v1 spec was deprecated in 2005). Our fonts work accurately & perfectly in shaping Malayalam characters with two of the most widely used shaping engines — HarfBuzz and Windows Uniscribe. But there are shaping engines and application softwares that do not adhere very well with the specification, either due to incomplete or buggy software implementations, such as Adobe Lipika world-ready composer. Owing to frequent user requests and anguish of having to see wrongly shaped Malayalam characters created by these applications, I have taken additional efforts to add basic support for the legacy/buggy shapers also. Support for Kobo ebook reader was added first. Support for Adobe Lipika shaper was also added, supporting InDesign versions 2021 and older. Even Windows XP is supported. These improvements are available with newest release of all RIT fonts, and should help to show Malayalam characters correctly shaped almost in every applications.

2023 സായാഹ്ന പുരസ്കാരം എം എൻ കാരശ്ശേരിക്കു്! ഏഴര ലക്ഷം രൂപയും ഫലകവുമടങ്ങുന്ന പുരസ്കാരം, 2023 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 5-നു റിവർ വാലി കാമ്പസിലെ (മലയിൻകീഴ്, തിരുവനന്തപുരം) കോൺഫറൻസ് ഹാളിൽ നടക്കുന്ന സെമിനാറിൽ വെച്ചു് ജേതാവിനു് സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നതാണു്. 2022 ജൂലൈ മുതൽ 2023 ജൂലൈ വരെ സായാഹ്നയിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണത്തിനായി ലഭിച്ച കൃതികളിൽ ഏറ്റവും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായവ എഴുത്തുകാരനും ഭാഷാപണ്ഡിതനും സാമൂഹിക നിരീക്ഷകനുമായ കാരശ്ശേരിയുടേതാണു്. 2022-ൽ പുരസ്കാര ജേതാവിനെ കണ്ടെത്താൻ സ്വീകരിച്ച അതേ മാനദണ്ഡങ്ങൾ തന്നെയാണു് ഇക്കൊല്ലവും സ്വീകരിച്ചതു്.

നമ്മുടെ ഗ്രന്ഥകർത്താക്കൾക്കു് സ്വതന്ത്ര ഡിജിറ്റൽ പതിപ്പുകൾ പൊതുവെ സ്വീകാര്യമല്ല. ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന കാരണം‌ അച്ചടിപ്പതിപ്പിന്റെ വില്പനയെ ബാധിക്കുന്നു എന്നതാണു്, പക്ഷെ, സത്യം തിരിച്ചാണു്. കാരശ്ശേരിക്കു് അങ്ങനെയൊരു ആശങ്കയില്ല, പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ അച്ചടിപ്പതിപ്പു് ഇപ്പോഴും വിപണിയിലുണ്ടു്, ഇല്ലാത്തവ പുനഃപ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടു്.

RIT Rachana MeeraNew v. 1.4

Rajeesh on new version of RIT Rachana and MeeraNew: The Malayalam serif font RIT Rachana and its sans-serif counterpart MeeraNew have enjoyed a wide array of improvements in the past months; and are available now for download and use.

Some notable improvements are listed here:

Entire Malayalam character set defined in Unicode 15, including archaic and vedic characters.
All characters — especially vowel signs — now belong to proper Unicode category GDEF class (thanks to Liang Hai for pointing out the correction), removing a workaround put in place just for Adobe InDesign. This workaround is not required when using HarfBuzz shaping engine (which you should anyway).
Improved design of old-style figures 0, 1 and 2 in RIT-Rachana.
Standalone dependent glyphs of pre-base ra (reph) and below-base la can be displayed with ‘zwj+് +‌ ര/ല’ respectively, useful for informational purpose (when writing a typography specific article, for instance). These characters otherwise always conjoin with the base character.
Major improvements in shaping rules to adhere to language rules even better: double consonants are always joined properly in context; even for unusual combinations. Correct shaping for below instance can be obtained by adding a ZWNJ before ണ but the advanced shaping rule is smarter to not require encoding corrections.
Improved underline position (although thou shalt question thyself why use underline in Indic scripts), which is now also respected by LibreOffice 7.5 thanks to Khaled Hosny. This bug was reported many years ago.
ന്‍ +‌ ് + റ → ന്റ (Unicode 5.1 atomic chillu nta) support added upon request.
… kerning improvements and many more tweaks and fine tuning. As usual, both typefaces are free and open source software, available at Rachana website. They will be available shortly in Fedora 36 and 37 as an update.

https://sayahna.net/ff-shaping In 2020 Rajeesh of Rachana Institute of Typography (RIT) tried to add functionality to FontForge to be able to use RIT's Malayalam shaping rules without modification in all our fonts. For e.g., it was not possible to use Rachana's shaping rules in Ezhuthu, as the latter had limited characters (950 glyphs vs 740 glyphs, approx). It took a while, but that change is now incorporated in FontForge's main source code. Now we can use just a single shaping rule without modifications in all our fonts!

Keywords and google search

Just a general inquiry about the keywords used in the articles. I suppose that if i use the ‘author name + sayahna’ (both are keywords in the articles) for google search (or any other search engine) then the articles of that author should appear in google search. But I couldn’t get any results with such a search for sayahna. Am I missing something here?

The upcoming Fedora release 36 (due end of April 2022) and beyond, and ELN (Enterprise Linux Next, what would become RHEL) will have default Malayalam script fonts as RIT Rachana and Meera New fonts. In addition, Sundar, TNJoy, Panmana and Ezhuthu fonts are now available in the official repositories. ശ്രീ കെ വി ജയരാജൻ സായാഹ്നയ്ക്കു് അയച്ച ഒരു മെയിലിൽ നിന്നു്: സാഹിത്യ വാരഫലം അതിന്റെ പേര് കൊണ്ട് അത്ര ആധുനികമല്ലെങ്കിലും അതിലെ പുസ്തകവിചാരം ആധുനികവും ആഗോള പരവുമാണ്. അത് മലയാളത്തിന്റെ സാഹിത്യവട്ടത്തെ വലിയ ചക്രവാളത്തിലേക്ക് രസം പറഞ്ഞ് കൊണ്ടുപോയി. എഡിറ്റ് ചെയ്യാത്ത സാഹിത്യവാരഫലം സമ്പൂർണ്ണകൃതി പ്രകാശിതമാവണമെന്നാണ് എന്റെ കൊതി. സഞ്ജയൻ സമ്പൂർണ്ണം പലരും ഇറക്കി. ഇന്ന് ആളുകൾ പേടിക്കുന്ന സാഹിത്യകാരന്മാരെ ഓരോ തരത്തിൽ കൊട്ട് കൊടുത്തതു കൊണ്ട് സാഹിത്യവാരഫലം അങ്ങനെത്തന്നെ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്നതിൽ പ്രസാധകന്മാർക്ക് മടി ഉണ്ടാകാം. നഷ്ടഭയവും ഉണ്ടാകാം. സായാഹ്നയുടെ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങൾ മികച്ചവയാണ്. സർക്കുലേഷന്റ പിറകെ പോകാതിരുന്നാൽ മലയാളത്തെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നവർ കൂടെ വരും. കെ പി നിർമ്മൽ കുമാറിന്റെ ഭാരത പുനരാഖ്യാനം കണ്ടു. പലതരം ആഖ്യാനങ്ങൾ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇത് അരോചകമായിപ്പോയി. അയാളുടെ തന്നെ രാമായണത്തെ ഉപജീവിച്ചുള്ള നോവലും ഇതിഹാസത്തെ ബലാൽസംഗം ചെയ്തതുപോലെ അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. ഈ പുസ്തകം ഖണ്ഡശ്ശ വന്നത് മാധ്യമം ആഴ്ചപതിപ്പിലാണെന്നത് യാദൃശ്ചികമല്ലെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു. കെ പി നിർമ്മൽ കുമാറിന്റെ ജലം എന്ന കഥാസമാഹാരം എന്റെ കൗമാരകാലത്ത് വായിച്ച് ഞാൻ അന്തിച്ചു പോയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പുതിയ അനുഭവമായിരുന്നു അത്. ഇന്ന് വായിച്ചാൽ എങ്ങനെ ഇരിക്കുമെന്ന് അറിഞ്ഞു കൂട. എഴുത്തിന് ഇന്ന് അഞ്ച് കൊല്ലത്തെ ആയുസ്സ് പോലുമില്ല. അവിടെയാണ് കൃഷ്ണൻ നായരും സഞ്ജയനും മലയാളത്തിലെ അമരന്മാരായി തുടരുന്നത്. സായാഹ്നയുടെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ വിജയിക്കട്ടെ. നന്ദി, സ്നേഹം.

Change of release schedule

From March 21, 2020 Sayahna Foundation has been releasing everyday a PDF of varying content like an article, a short story, a poem or a digest of political cartoons that is formatted for the small screen of smart devices. Each PDF release can be read within 45 to 60 minutes thus making each morning of the Covid lock down days a bit more interesting. The daily program was a huge success with thousands of readers and was continuing without break till last week, thus we have released more than 500 PDFs under creative commons license for free public consumption. It was a completely volunteer driven effort. Recently, due to the changes in the lives of some of our key volunteers (marriages, hospitalization and convalescence, changes in day jobs, and the like), which was not unexpected, we have been facing non-availability of sufficient volunteer time to continue the daily releases without break. Therefore, we decided to make the releases on a weekly basis on every Monday with all available PDFs generated during the previous week in one go. Hope, our valuable readers will accommodate with our shortcoming, changed release strategy and will extend their patronage as before.

On the personal front, I am very much indebted to Don for writing one of the greatest software that the world has seen, namely, TeX. It has become the very basis of my existence ever since I got acquainted with it during my thirties as it helped fight with my disaster-ridden motor neuron disease that debilitated me literally, reducing to a wheelchair. പുതിയ ഇടം തുടങ്ങിയതല്ലേയുള്ളൂ. വാട്സപ് ഗ്രൂപ്പിൽ തുടക്കം മുതലേയുണ്ട്. 😊 ഒരു പാട് ഇഷ്ടവുമാണ്. ഞാനും മലയാളം കമ്പ്യൂട്ടിംഗും സ്വതന്ത്ര മലയാളവും ഒക്കെയായി പരിചയിച്ച ആളാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ സായാഹ്ന ഒരു ആവേശവും. സായാഹ്നയുടെ വാട്സപ് ഗ്രൂപ്പിലെ ചർച്ചകൾ വളരെ ഉപകാരപ്രദമായിരുന്നു. അത് പല തരത്തിലാണ്. ഒന്ന് വൈവിധ്യമുള്ള വിഷയങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അറിവ്. പിന്നൊന്ന് എങ്ങനെ ഇത്തരം ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളിൽ ജനാധിപത്യപരമായി സംവദിക്കാം എന്നത്. മറ്റൊന്ന് അഭിരുചികളുടെ ഇത്രയും വൈവിധ്യങ്ങളേയും അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന അഭിപ്രായ വ്യത്യാസങ്ങളേയും ചേർത്തു നിർത്തി കൃത്യമായ നിലപാടിലൂടെ തന്നെ ഒരു ഗ്രൂപ്പ് എങ്ങനെ മുന്നോട്ട് കൊണ്ടു പോകാമെന്ന്. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ ആ സജീവത പുതിയ ഇടത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുമോ എന്നറിയില്ല... നോക്കാം. ഞാൻ ഒരു ചർച്ചയിലും പങ്കെടുത്തിട്ടില്ലെങ്കിലും എല്ലാം കൃത്യമായി ഫോളോ ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. -- ജീജ

പുതിയ ചർച്ചകൾ "New Discussion" എന്ന ബട്ടൺ അമർത്തുമ്പോൾ കാണുന്ന പാഠനിവേശന ഫോറത്തിൽ, "Discussion Title" എന്ന പെട്ടിയിൽ ഒരു ശീർഷകം നല്കിയശേഷം അതിനു താഴെക്കാണുന്ന പെട്ടിയിൽ നിങ്ങൾക്കു് പറയാനുള്ളതു് നിവേശനം നടത്തുക. "Preview" എന്ന ബട്ടൺ അമർത്തിയാൽ വെബിൽ ഈ പോസ്റ്റ് എങ്ങനെ ദൃശ്യമാവും എന്നും മനസ്സിലാക്കാം. പാഠനിവേശനം കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ താങ്കൾ തുടക്കമിടുന്ന ചർച്ചയ്ക്കു് വേണ്ട "keywords" കൊടുക്കാം. അതിലേയ്ക്കു് "Tags" എന്ന ബോക്സിൽ കീവേഡുകൾ ചേർക്കുക. കീവേഡായി കരുതുന്ന വാക്കോ, വാക്കുകളോ ചേർത്തിട്ടു് "ടാബ്" കീ അമർത്തിയാൽ അതൊരു "ടാഗ്" ആയി മാറിക്കഴിയും. അങ്ങനെ, അഞ്ചു കീവേഡുകൾ ചേർക്കാം. ഇതു് ഭാവിയിൽ ഈ ഫോറം തെരയുന്നവർക്കു പ്രയോജനപ്പെടും. എപ്പോഴും പുതിയ ചർച്ചകൾ തുടങ്ങുക. അല്ലാതെ "സായാഹ്ന ഫോറം" എന്ന ത്രഡിൽ വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും കമന്റുകൾ ചേർക്കാതിരിക്കുക.

സായാഹ്ന മറ്റൊരു ദിശ സ്വീകരിക്കുയാണ്‌.

സായാഹ്നയുടെ സ്വന്തം സെര്‍വർ ഉപയോഗിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു ചര്‍ച്ചാവേദി (discussion group) ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. ഇതുകൊണ്ട് പ്രധാനമായും ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത് ഇപ്പോള്‍ വാട്‌‌സാപ്പ്/ടെലഗ്രാം തുടങ്ങിയവയെ ആശ്രയിച്ചുള്ള വിവിധ ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളില്‍ നമുക്കുള്ള അംഗങ്ങളെയും അവരുടെ പ്രതികരണങ്ങളെയും ഒരൊറ്റ ഇടത്തെയ്ക്ക് ഏകോപിപ്പിക്കാനും അങ്ങനെ നമ്മുടെ ദിനേനയുള്ള വായനയെ പൊതുവായ ഒരിടത്തെയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റുക എന്നുമാണ്. ഇപ്പോള്‍ പലയിടങ്ങളിലായി ചിതറി കിടക്കുന്ന അംഗങ്ങളെയും അവരുടെ സര്‍ഗ്ഗാത്മക സംഭാവനകളെയും ഒരു സ്ഥലത്ത് കാണുമെന്നാണ്: ഒരു വിര്‍ച്ച്വല്‍ ഹാളില്‍ എന്നും നമ്മള്‍ കാണുന്നു എന്ന് സങ്കല്‍പ്പിക്കുന്നതിലെ ഭംഗി തന്നെ! തീർച്ചയായും അംഗങ്ങളുടെ സ്വകാര്യതയെ ഒരു തരത്തിലും ഹനിക്കാതെയായിരിക്കും ഇതെല്ലാം ചെയ്യുക.
